Marsaxlokk are only one point away from winning the Carlsberg Tournament when this evening they face hosts Hibernians in a decisive clash at Corradino (kick-off 8 p.m.)

The Southseasiders are currently leading the standings with six points after winning their opening two matches against Floriana (5-1) and Msida St Joseph (3-2).

Although Robert Kelly's men are favourites to win this annual pre-season tournament, their task is expected to be a difficult one as they meet a Hibernians side who could still win the tournament if they achieve a high-scoring victory.

The Paolites will also be determined to make up for their disappointing performance in their 2-0 defeat to Floriana last Wednesday.

Today's two-match programme gets underway with the clash between Floriana and Msida St Joseph at 6 p.m.

The Greens, lifted by their fine performance against Hibernians, will be looking to earn another morale-boosting win ahead of their opening Premier League clash against Balzan Youths on Sunday.

Against Hibernians, Ziya Yildiz's men were a completely transformed side from the one that was outplayed by Marsaxlokk in their first match which the southseasiders won 5-1.

Premier League newcomers Msida St Joseph are still in search of their first point in the Carlsberg Tournament and will be looking forward to break their duck against the Greens.

Victories for Hibernians and Floriana today would result in three teams sharing top spot with six points each.

If two or more teams obtain the same number of points at the end of the tournament, goal difference will come into play. Direct confrontations of the tied teams will be taken into consideration if the difference between goals scored and conceded fails to determine a winner.

Today's programme: 6 p.m. Floriana vs Msida St Joseph; 8 p.m. Hibernians vs Marsaxlokk.

Standings: Marsaxlokk 6; Floriana, Hibs 3; Msida 0.

Asechemie interest

Meanwhile, Marsaxlokk are hopeful of landing the signature of Marsa's Nigerian midfielder Minabo Asechemie in the next few days.

Damian Iwueke, Asechemie's agent, told The Times that negotiations between Marsaxlokk and Marsa are on-going.

"I can confirm that Marsaxlokk are very interested in Asechemie who is currently in London. Discussions with Marsa over Asechemie's transfer to Marsaxlokk will continue over the next few days," Iwueke said.

Marsaxlokk, one of the biggest spenders in the close season market, currently have two foreign players on their books, Bulgarian Nikolai Slavtchev and Petr Bartes, from the Czech Republic.

Marsa were relegated to Division One last season.
