Following Norway's victory in their final match, Malta placed a very creditable equal second together with Austria and Greece in the ECC Trophy.

With 11 countries participating and an unusual format adopted, Malta, Norway and Greece qualified from their preliminary groups as winners, with Austria making up the fourth country in the final group as best overall second-placed team.

Norway deserved to win the ECC Notts Sports Trophy for 2003 in Vienna as they convincingly saw off all teams in the final group to pick up a maximum six points.

However, the other three qualifying countries each won one and lost one in their direct encounters to finish with two points each. Malta had the better of Greece but lost to Austria, and the Greeks beat Austria.

Other positions: Portugal, 5th; Belgium, 6th; Spain, 7th; Finland, 8th; Switzerland, 9th; Croatia, 10th; Luxembourg, 11th.

This is Malta's best placing in this biennial European competition between the ICC affiliate member countries.

The participation of the Maltese cricket team was supported by Cortis Group, KPMG, Malta Tourism Authority and Interpharma.
