Over the weekend, Marsa CC played Pretenders, from the UK, in a three-game series.

The first fixture, a Twenty20 game, was on Friday evening. Frank Spiteri opened the batting for the hosts and batted through the whole innings. He was 84 not out.

Marsa totalled 147 runs from their overs. Duncan Stahl was the main wicket-taker with two for the visitors.

In reply, Pretenders were bowled out for 119. Gordon Hewitt led the attack, taking five wickets. For the visitors, T. Hall top-scored with 38 runs.

On Saturday, Pretenders won the toss and elected to bat first. A great innings from Stahl, scoring 85 runs, and L. Derrin, 43, had the visitors reaching a total of 205 runs. For Marsa, Faraaz Bhatti took five wickets.

In reply, Marsa's opening batsman John Grima played through the innings and remained 77 runs not out.

Joy Ghoseroy made 36 runs. Their efforts, however, were not enough and Marsa lost by 36 runs. At this stage, the series was level at one-all.

On Sunday, Marsa batted first. Spiteri, again, opened the batting and remained unbeaten, scoring 78 runs, including seven 4s and a 6. Ronnie Sacco hit 25 runs. The local side ended with 169 runs from the allotted overs. For Pretenders, Uz Khalid and Stahl took three wickets each.

Marsa bowled very tight to keep the visitors from winning as Pretenders totalled 147 runs with Stahl top-scoring with a 33. Hewitt was in the wickets again, taking three for an overall tally of nine against Pretenders. Marsa won the series 2-1.

The previous Tuesday, Marsa had also wrapped up a whitewash against the Royal Horse Artillery team. The latter, batting first, made 149 runs with Wally Glynn taking four wickets and Gordon Hewitt and David Judd claiming three apiece.

Marsa's successful reply had Alan Kyle scoring 54, John Grima 32 and Justin Brookes 31 runs not out.
