Mario Camilleri, who was murdered with his 21-year-old son two years ago today, was finally laid to rest this morning.

His remains had been exhumed for further investigations on July 23, 2013, four days after the funeral.

This morning his family gathered for the second funeral Mass at St Dominic Church in Valletta.

This body was released for reburial in January but his family had to wait for two years to pass to be able to reopen the grave. Father and son are buried in the same grave.

Mr Camilleri, 51,  known as l-Imnieħru   - a convicted drug trafficker - died in Marsaxlokk and his 21-year-old son, Mario Jnr, was shot and stabbed 34 times in Qajjenza, limits of Birżebbuġa, shortly afterwards.

They were found partly buried in a shallow grave in a field in Qajjenza on July 17, 2013.

Ms Camilleri’s brother – Jason Galea – and George Galea are pleading not guilty to the murders.

Mr Camilleri’s body had been exhumed to settle a conflict between investigators and medical examiners on the cause of death. During the court case a magistrate heard how he died of a heart attack caused by a blood clot – not from gunshot wounds.
