A 20-year-old man was placed under a probation order for two years and fined €3,800 for the possession of cannabis and assaulting a police officer in Gzira yesterday.

Syrian-born Alnafouri Mohamad Nour, 20, who lives in San Gwann admitted to the possession of the cannabis, assaulting and disobeying police, breaching the peace, damaging a parked car, breaching bail conditions and relapsing.

Mr Nour was arrested after police officers patrolling the Gzira area noticed him drive past without wearing a seat belt.

Police drove after him and noticed him throw pieces of foil out of the window. Police continued driving behind him and turned on the blue beacon light and, soon after, he stopped.

The two officers then walked with him to the area where he had thrown the foil. Some time later one of the officers went back for the police car while the other stayed with Mr Nour who was handcuffed. At one point Mr Nour knocked  the officer to the ground in an attempt to destroy the drugs. Mr Nour admitted to the charges and committed himself to pay for the damage caused to the parked car.

Police Inspectors Pierre Grech and Jason Sultana prosecuted.

Lawyer Gianluca Caruana Curran represented the accused.
