Reno Azzopardi 23, of Paola, was remanded in custody today after being accused of attacking a man with a saw and stealing horse-related apparatus and medicine from a garage in Marsa.

The incident allegedly took place on Saturday afternoon.

Azzopardi denied charges of having stolen items worth €2,398, handling stolen property, and causing serious injury to Paul D’Amato as the theft was being carried out.

The Court heard that Mr D’Amato was hit by a saw normally used for cutting stone. He suffered facial and hand injuries. Mr Azzopardi in a police statement said he had acted in self-defence.

In other cases, Kevin Saliba, 33 of Sliema, was remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to being in possession of 60 grams of cocaine which were not for personal use. He was also accused of trafficking and breaching the conditions of a previous release.

Gilbert Agius, 31, of Cospicua was ordered by a Court not to leave his House after he pleaded not guilty to stealing under €1,165 worth of welding cable from Malta Shipyards last Sunday. He pleaded not guilty.

His lawyer, Joseph Mifsud, said Mr Agius needed the help of a probation officer and a residential programme to help his kick a drug habit.
