A man who stands accused of involvement in the fatal stabbing of a woman during a robbery 26 years ago goes on trial today.

Salvatore Mangion is accused of having stabbed Rosina Zammit, 54 of Safi, some 40 times in February 1984.

A jury earlier this year decided that Mr Mangion was mentally fit to stand trial.

The trial is one of four to be held this week. In another trial, Cikku Fenech, 70 of Mosta, stands accused of the attempted murder of John Pace, who he allegedly shot at during an incident in a field in May 2003. That trial will be held without a jury.

In the other trials, two foreigners stand accused of drug importation and association to traffic drugs.
