An 18-year-old Briton on holiday in Malta was today given a 15-month jail term suspended for three years and fined €4,000 to be paid within two years after he pleaded guilty to slightly injuring a police sergeant, resisting arrest and causing €200 worth of damage.

Sources said some taxi drivers informed the police of an argument between four people and when the police went to investigate and asked Thomas Morrison to see his papers, he ran away.

Sergeant Andrew St John caught him but the accused elbowed the officer and continued to run. When he was eventually caught, he tripped the officer who fell on the ground. The officer lost his watch and tore his shirt in a scuffle later.

The court also ordered the accused to pay the €200 worth of damages within two days.

Legal aid Joseph Ellis appeared for the accused, inspector Matthew Spagnol prosecuted.
