A 61-year-old Bulgarian man was critically injured when he fell a height of seven metres down a ship's hold at Malta Freeport.

The incident happened at about 11am today. 

The man, who is an electrician, is believed to have been working on some machinery when he fell. 

Rescuers from the Civil Protection Department were called to lift him from the hold.

He is in intensive care at Mater Dei.
