A man who bought jewellery and a TV set using somebody else's credit card and PIN has been placed under probation for three years and ordered to reimburse HSBC and a jeweller.
Michel Rizzo, 34, of Fgura, was convicted of having, in April 2011, bought jewellery worth €1,430 as well as a TV set worth €590.
The court heard how on April 29, 2011, Clinton Borg reported to the police that somebody was making illegal and unauthorised use of his Quickcash card.
Earlier that month, Mr Borg had told HSBC that his card was damaged, and he requested a replacement. Although the bank sent him a new card and PIN number, he never got them. The bank then established that they were used by somebody else.
Footage from CCTVs helped identify the accused Michel Rizzo.
Mr Borg told the court that HSBC bank had reimbursed his money.
In handing down judgement, the court observed that the accused was a recovering drug addict. It placed him under probation for three years and ordered him to reimburse HSBC and a jewellery shop.
