A man admitted to vandalising the Floriana health centre earlier this month, but will only learn his punishment in two weeks’ time pending a psychological report to determine his mental sanity at the time.

The 21-year-old Somali, who is unemployed with no fixed address, was arraigned this morning and pleaded guilty to all charges, including causing between €250 and €2,500 in damages to government property. He refused legal aid and cited mental problems to justify his behaviour.

The incident occurred on the evening of April 8, when the accused had damaged several computers and slightly injured a security guard.

Police Inspector Jeffrey Scicluna told the court that the man had not been in a state to make a statement during interrogation.

The court presided by Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera appointed psychiatrist David Cassar to examine the accused and determine if he was mentally sane at the time of the incident.

He was denied bail and remanded in custody at Mount Carmelo Hospital.
