The Medical Association of Malta's new council yesterday elected Martin Balzan as its new president, a post he is expected to hold for the next three years.

He replaces Stephen Fava, who occupied the post for two consecutive terms.

Dr Balzan, a respiratory physician, had occupied the post of secretary general of the association for the past three years.

The council - elected last Friday following a postal ballot among association members - met for the first time yesterday. Surgeon Gordon Caruana Dingli is the new general secretary and trainee surgeon Clifford Caruana became deputy general secretary. Karl Causon, a family doctor, was appointed vice president, gastroenterologist James Pocock is the international secretary and surgeon Angela Sultana is treasurer.

The council will now be nominating the next president of the Commonwealth Medical Association, which the MAM is a member of. At the last Commonwealth Medical Association meeting Maltese doctors Myra Tilney and John Paul Tabone were elected treasurer and regional vice president.
