A pet is given as a gift to be kept and cared for throughout its life, Freddie Fenech of the Abandoned Animals Association said as he appealed to animal lovers to home half a dozen cute puppies that were abandoned in Mosta.

The AAA, he said, is being extra careful this Christmas to ensure that if given as a present to someone, pets are kept for their lifetime and are not abandoned in the street once the festive season is over or when the pets start to grow up.

The puppies, six Labrador crossbreds, were found in the front porch of a residence of the Goggi family in Mosta. It is thought their mother strayed away or was taken away soon after giving birth.

Their survival is the result of the love for animals by family members, who "adopted" the puppies and bottle-fed them for a number of weeks before handing them to the AAA for homing. The puppies are eight weeks old.
