The Medical Association of Malta said today that its members had no intention to take over the management of other healthcare professionals, but doctors expected to be involved in clinical decisions for which they were ultimately held responsible.

The association was reacting to statements over the weekend by the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) about a new Strategic Business Unit at Mater Dei Hospital.

MAM president Gordon Caruana Dingli and general secretary Martin Balzan said they broadly agreed with the proposed unit, but they still had to see the details.

The unit, they said, was expected to bring about closer collaboration between the various healthcare professions at Mater Dei.

The officials said they were open for talks with the governemnt on the proposed unit but would not tolerate any fait accompli

Asked about the situation at Mater Dei, Dr Caruana Dingli said capacity clearly needed to increase. Efficiency could be improved, but this was clearly not enough, and more beds and manpower was needed.
