No longer will people think of the architecture in Malta as “Maltese” and special to Malta. What is being built nowadays can no longer be described as one style at all.
Blocks of flats everywhere have no harmony with adjoining blocks. Profiles are ugly and one could be anywhere in the world. Nothing says “I am Maltese”. Inside they may be wonderful but if one stands at, for example, Independence Gardens in Sliema and looks towards Spinola, the view is a mish-mash of unharmonious blocks of flats.
Think of the elegance of the exterior of the Hotel Giuliani at Spinola, a few antique houses adjoining.
Enjoy the harmony of the architecture and the surroundings and then go and look at Spinola Bay from a distance – shabby, disjointed and could be any country in the world – nothing says Maltese!
