Malta's taxation rate was among the lowest in Europe, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said this morning.

Speaking during the launch of a Tax Payers’ Charter, the minister said that the government’s income from taxes was 34.7 per cent of the gross domestic product while the European average was 37 per cent. The wages were on the lower side of average.

Mr Fenech said that the aim of the charter, launched during an international conference organised by the Malta Institute of Taxation, is to strengthen the relationship between the taxation departments and the community.

He stressed the importance of providing a fair and efficient service, which was tough with those who tried to avoid their obligations to detriment of those who observed the law.
