The following are the top stories in the Maltese press today.

THE TIMES

-          The police are to arraign a couple from Qormi after 1.2 kilos of cocaine was found at its residence. The haul has a street value of some Lm35,000.

-          Italian police shot a DJ by mistake on Sunday as they sought to break up a scuffle between football fans. The incident sparked protests and violence in Rome and other Italian cities.

THE MALTA INDEPENDENT

The European Commission has confirmed Malta's progress as the economy has been placed on a firm footing, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said.

-          Malta yesterday joined the rest of the Commonwealth in marking  Remembrance Sunday.

IN-NAZZJON

-          Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has demanded an apology from the MLP to the medical profession after criticism following the first medical intervention at Mater Dei Hospital last week.

-          New murder trial starts today.

-          Opposition leader Alfred Sant has promised that a new Labour government will give priority to controlling the cost of living.
