The fight against the influx of GMOs in countries of the European Union is an ongoing battle where on one side you have the environmentalists, the left block and the greens and on the other side you have big multinational companies trying to penetrate the European market to gain control and flood the agricultural sector with GMOs, the same as what is happening in the bio fuel sector in Third World countries.

In this situation, Żminijietna - Voice of the Left greatly regrets that European Commissioner John Dalli gave his approval for the cultivation of a genetically-modified potato, known as Amflora. We fear that Mr Dalli bowed to pressure that has been exerted since 2003 by the multinational company

BASF to infiltrate the European market and cultivate and produce Amflora. It is to be noted that the government of Cyprus has urged the European Commission to declare Cyprus a "GMO-free zone". The Cyprus government rightfully claims that "due to the geography of the country, being a small island, any cultivation of GMO products makes it easier to infect the flora of the island".

Żminijietna calls on the Maltese government and the MEPs to follow this example and for the same reasons insist within the EU to declare the Maltese islands a "GMO-free zone". We also demand that Mr Dalli act in favour of a social and ecological Europe, free from GMOs and not give in to pressure from the giant multinationals.
