I read with sadness about the young man who choked to death (The Sunday Times, May 16).
I couldn't believe that such a senseless death could not have been avoided. However, I also recalled a conversation I had with a German friend of mine some years ago in which I asked him whether he knew how to administer First Aid.
"Of course," he replied, "in Germany you must have a First Aid certificate to get a driving licence."
Now I don't know whether this is true or not, but it nevertheless sounds like a very good idea to make it compulsory to have a First Aid certificate in order to obtain a driving licence.
That would ensure we have many competent First Aiders around.
