Lufthansa Technik Malta's new hangars will be hosting their first aircraft, an Airbus A330, in December, the company's CEO, Louis Giordimaina, said.

As he walked Investment Minister Tonio Fenech through the new facilities nearing completion, Mr Giordimaina explained that the company had already received various bookings for the maintenance of planes.

Mr Fenech recalled that the construction of the new 60,000-square-metre facilities followed an agreement reached between government and Lufthansa Technik in June and a €60 million joint investment.

The project involved the building of three hangars and an administration building. Two hangars will accommodate wide-body aircraft, such as the Airbus A330 and A340, while the third, smaller hangar will cater for smaller planes such as the Airbus A320 and the Boeing B737. Mr Giordimaina said that, apart from allowing the company to increase its competitiveness, this investment had also generated employment.

Lufthansa Technik currently employs about 400 people and the plan is to increase the number to 750 workers by 2010, he said.
