Sixth Form students at St Martin's College, Swatar, recently took part in the school's Art Lovers' Trip which this year was held in London for the second time since its inception in 2004.

At the National Gallery, Tate Britain, Tate Modern, and the Courtauld Gallery the students were given presentations and guided tours by professional art guides and by college art teacher Mario Borg.

At the National Gallery the students also had the opportunity to visit the exhibition 'Renaissance Faces: Van Eyck to Titian' which explored the dramatic use of portraiture in the Renaissance.

In spite of the rain and the grey weather, every day was packed with exciting new encounters with artists and their masterpieces.

The trip also included a fascinating visit to West Highgate, one of London's 'Magnificent Seven' 19th-century cemeteries, during which a knowledgeable guide unlocked the cemetery's secrets for the group.

So once again it was a very successful art trip which, besides broadening the students' outlook on art and art history, was also useful for the Sixth Formers' forthcoming Systems of Knowledge and Art A-level exams.
