Football history will be made tomorrow as World Cup finalists Spain and the Netherlands battle it out to win the tournament for the first time. In true cosmopolitan spirit, David Schembri took to the streets and captured the international flavour of opinions. Who will win the coveted trophy?

Charlie Xuereb from San FranciscoHe thinks Spain will win the World Cup because "they're my favourite team", giving the thumbs up sign.

Charlotte Meyer, from Denmark
Does not really care about the cup. Asking her children who they thought would win, she realises she doesn't even know who is in the final. "I didn't even know Germany was out," she says. When told who the finalists were she decides on "Netherlands. Yeah, definitely."

Keiichi Iwasaki, from Japan
Thinks the Netherlands will win, "because Japan lost with Netherlands", which was probably an indication that they were a good team.

Emil Pop, from Romania
Hopes Spain will win. He thinks their football is "nicer" than the Netherlands'. His wife, Gabriela Ionescu, thinks the Netherlands will win, because "in life not always the best takes all" and the team was a bit luckier.

Carolina Perez, from Cataluña
After picking out the word "football" from the question, she blurts out "Spain" as an answer.

Melvin Bugeja, from Malta
Thinks Spain will win the World Cup, even though, since his favourites England have long been booted out of the tournament, he will be rooting for the Netherlands tomorrow. "Spain seems to be more concentrated on the game and also offer some spectacle."

On a diplomatic note

Spanish Ambassador María Isabel Vicandi is convinced her country will clinch the trophy. She lists Andrés Iniesta and Iker Casillas as her favourite players but believes the team is strong.

"I think they're very creative in their games... and motivated to win the cup for the first time in their history. I think they're also coordinated and that they're very well guided by their coach. I think they're a very good team and I do believe they are going to win."

Dutch Ambassador Robbert J. Gabriëlse is less sure, since there were a lot of predictions, including Paul, the German "psychic" octopus, who has predicted Spain will win the World Cup.

"One African traditional healer said it would be 2-0 for Holland, so we'll go with that. Then we have the story of this octopus, which is from Oberhausen, although I understand he always chooses the box on the right side. We have a live aquarium in... and there we have a female octopus, Pauline, and she predicted Holland would win. And this sea aquarium has offered asylum if it turns out Paul was wrong."

"Until now, the Dutch played well, their strength was as a team, but players such as Van Persie are not performing at their best, so they still can do better. We hope Spain peaked a bit too soon and we can still peak in the final."

He said there was a strong link between the two countries, as a lot of Dutch players joined clubs such as Barcelona and Real Madrid but "it all depends on who plays best on the day".
