A group of Libyans living in Malta held a protest calling for the introduction of “true democracy” in post-Gaddafi Libya.
The group of irate protesters stuck graphic placards to the pedestrian barriers along City Gate, Valletta in an attempt to raise awareness on the failings of Libyan democracy.
Khaled Baara, who organised the event, told timesofmalta.com that Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zidan was responsible for the “chaotic mess” ravaging the post-revolution state.
“We want to learn from Malta and build a real republic like here,” he said.
Most of the protesters raised concerns over the recent visit of Libyan Foreign Minister Mohammed Emhemmed Abdul Aziz.
“He is a crook and has lied to the Maltese people. The real revolution will see him brought to justice,” the protesters said.
The mostly peaceful protest came to blows when a group of other Libyans took offence at comments that Misurata had played a role in the failed democracy.
Protester Osama Benzeglam said Gaddafi loyalists had infiltrated the Zidan Government and were succeeding in hindering its success.
He said that the growing tensions in the North African region would eventually have a baring effect on Malta.
“You cannot just wait and do nothing here. We need your help. Libya needs your help,” he said.
