Pay increases or financial allocations for academics should be justified and should reflect the service provided, an agricultural management student argued yesterday.

Speaking during yesterday's graduation ceremony at the university's Sir Temi Zammit Hall, Karl Grima Bezzina said if a shop owner did not value his customers he lost sales. It was the same situation at the university, whose students were not always getting what they deserved.

He recounted instances where they sought assistance but found closed doors, or had to endure two late afternoon bus rides only to arrive at university and learn their lecture had been cancelled.

"Students should have an active role in decision-making," Mr Grima Bezzina also insisted.

He described graduation as a moment of transition, which represented the dedication students put into their studies, a significant achievement in both their personal and professional futures.

Through this graduation, he concluded, the university was bestowing students with a "treasure" of knowledge that would endure forever.

In a separate address, Janet Barthet, a communications student, spoke of the importance of the ethical values media students received as part of their studies, and said this should not just apply to media students but to all fields of work and industry.

The ideas and values that the university impressed on graduates, she said, should be held close and adhered to, emphasising that these ideas made students the leaders of the present, as well as of the future.

Ms Barthet said today's graduates have the potential to influence society with innovative ideas that stimulate the economy and, eventually, the whole country.

At the same time, this meant that young graduates must shoulder the responsibility of this influence, especially in the field of communications.

The media's strength and the way they could affect public perception was well known: "Our responsibility to contribute positively to society should not be forgotten."

Referring to the university itself, Ms Barthet urged faculties and departments to update their teaching approach to conform to the demands of modern society. Although several faculties were updating themselves, a lot still had to be done before all the students could benefit from updated systems and approaches.
