In the only Division One match of the weekend, Ghajnsielem preserved their unbeaten record in the championship with a last-gasp equaliser against Kercem Ajax. The Blacks are the sole leaders in the standings, one point ahead of Xewkija Tigers.

Kercem Ajax 1
Ghajnsielem 1

Kercem were minutes away from an important victory which could have changed their aspirations from a mid-table outfit to serious title contenders. However, the Blacks had other ideas and their perseverance finally paid off just before the final whistle.

Ghajnsielem launched their first serious attack inside the first few minutes when a header by Irielle was turned to a corner in style by keeper Aktpan.

Kercem replied with a Mark Marlow free-kick which was saved with difficulty by Mercieca.

The Ajax opened the score right on the half-hour with a spectacular Ryan Buttigieg volley that left Aktpan stranded. The Blacks lost their plot as Kercem held composure to keep their more quoted opponents away from their goal.

After the break, Aktpan blocked a firm drive from substitute Errol Grima. Kercem had good chances to make sure of victory but efforts from Gotthard Conti and Elton Vella never went past Mercieca.

For this Kercem paid dearly as a minute from time, Grima slid the ball home from a Herman Mifsud free-kick.

Referee: Reno Refalo.

Sprite Division II

Lowly Gharb Rangers notched their first point in Division Two after surprisingly holding promotion-seekers St Lawrence Spurs to a draw. Gharb had a very good match against their neighbours and were close to winning full points had it not been for a 93rd-minute Spurs' equaliser.

The two teams finished with ten players each as early as the 28th minute when the referee red-carded Philip Bajada, of Gharb, and Jonathan Micallef, of St Lawrence.

Rangers, with goalkeeper Daniel Swift making his debut, took the lead after 35 minutes from a Roy Vella free-kick.

Jamie Enriquez followed team-mate Micallef for an early shower in the 57th minute.

But, despite the numerical handicap, St Lawrence still saved the match when Matthew Francalanza scored from close in deep into stoppage time.
