The police should educate the public rather than simply dish out fines, Labour spokesman Michael Falzon said yesterday.

Dr Falzon said this in light of the recent instructions reported to have been given to the police whereby each member of the corps must collect a certain amount of money through fines under the Litter Act or face disciplinary measures.

This was not the way things should be done, Dr Falzon said. The police should help educate people rather than issue fines haphazardly to reach a quota.
