Jurors have retired to deliberate whether 49-year-old George Xuereb was involved in an attempted robbery on a Mid-Med Bank branch in 1996.

Mr Xuereb, from Marsa, stands accused of being one of a gang of armed men who tried to rob the bank in Swieqi. Their attempt was foiled by armed officers.

Mr Xuereb is also accused of the attempted murder of two policemen in a shootout outside the bank.

Mr Justice Michael Mallia concluded his almost four-hour address and sent the jurors to deliberate their verdict.

The prosecution in this case is insisting that there was no doubt of the man's involvement in the attempted robbery 18 years ago but his defence lawyer is saying there was absolutely no evidence linking his client to the foiled hold-up.
