MP Marlene Farrugia claimed last night that the Prime Minister wanted to create trouble with her partner and Labour MP Godfrey Farrugia through a parliamentary vote.

Speaking on TV programme Xarabank, Dr Farrugia said Joseph Muscat tried to compromise her partner's position during a recent parliamentary vote on the environment.

"The Opposition tried to amalgamate the two motions to send the message that the House is united," she said, but the government refused to do so. Godfrey Farrugia "realised Muscat was trying to compromise his position" and voted with the government.

Asked whether she felt Dr Muscat tried to pit the Labour whip and her partner against her, Dr Farrugia replied: "Of course, isn't it obvious?"

The outspoken MP resigned from the Labour Party last month saying she was after more transparent governance, “particularly in environmental matters”.

She declared that she would stay on as an independent MP, after having supported Opposition amendments on the procedures to be followed in the appointment of the chairman and certain board members on the new environment authority.
