First and foremost I would like to congratulate those behind the brainchild of organising the Malta Football Awards. From what I saw on TV, the show was perfectly organised.
Among the personalities invited I noticed one who, in my own way of thinking, deserved something of a mention especially among those Maltese footballers who once played or are now playing abroad - Joe Cilia.
Being the only one present in that memorable match against Austria way back in 1957 and still active in the Coaches Committee, that makes a total of 52 years in football since he signed for Rabat Ajax in 1950.
As a player and coach Cilia won all honours that the local game could offer including being the first one to lift the coveted Footballer of the Year award twice before emigrating to Australia where he made the grade both as a player and coach.
He also won the Maltese Herald Footballer of the Year twice in succession and was also voted the best player in his division.
I hope that the young organisers of the Malta Football Awards overlooked Cilia unintentionally and I hope the Malta FA would one day give some recognition to this gentleman of football who gave loyal service to the Maltese game.
