Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino this morning took part in a clean-up event at Xrobb l-Ghagin, held as part of the European Week for Waste Reduction.

The minister said that this year the directorate continued to improve the quality of the equipment used in clean-ups buying €190,000 worth of machinery using advanced technology to clean up pedestrian zones, open spaces and public areas.

Another €50,000 were spent on two floor scrubbers and €6,000 on a gum busting machine.

The minister said that 250 new waste containers were placed in arterial roads and public areas this year, bringing the total to 850.

Eighty tonnes of illegally dumped waste were removed from several areas of the island.
