John Carmel Navarro thinks Tigné Point is a slum (Tigné Point Eyesore, January 21). Well I can tell him that what I paid for my apartment is certainly not the price of a slum!

He talks of the blocks of flats that have been knocked down in London. Really? I own a flat in a mansion block in the West End that's over a hundred years old and there are many blocks like it throughout London.

There are also many modern developments that have gone up along the Thames and in Docklands that are equally as dense as Tigné Point. While it is true that many of the 1960s style concrete jungles have been demolished, many innovative modern designs continue to be built all the time.

Malta has a beautiful heritage and one of the reasons I am moving to Tigné is the wonderful views of Valletta which are among the finest in Europe, but that does not mean that everything built on the coastline has to be in a similar traditional architectural style. As construction evolves new designs need to be created and this happens in every country. You only have to look at the City of London to see new cutting-edge architecture creatively harmonised with classical old buildings alongside them.

Design, like art, is subjective and Mr Navarro is as entitled to his view as I am to mine but to denigrate Tigné Point as a slum is going too far. Perhaps he should travel further afield on the island and see some of the derelict, half-finished and abandoned buildings which are far better suited to his epithet.

The Tigné Point I have chosen is a well-designed development incorporating many energy saving devices as well as being a car-free zone. It is one of the very few developments on the island of an international calibre. Malta should be proud that it now has this excellent comprehensive development allowing as fine a modern lifestyle as anywhere in Europe that is bringing appreciative foreign investors to its shores.
