This week, the Malta Rugby Football Union (MRFU) will start its first inter-school Touch Rugby championship for students aged between 11 and 15. The schools participating are St Aloysius, St Martins, St Edwards and San Andrea.

Touch Rugby is played by children all over the world. Young participants are not allowed to tackle in the traditional, high-physical manner, but instead touch their opponents on most parts of the body, clothing or the ball.

Rugby is one of the few sports that develops the whole body and teaches players to respect opponents from a very young age. The MRFU is seeking to introduce the game to other schools. One may obtain more details by phoning 9977-0763.

A Touch Rugby tournament was played recently at the St Aloysius Sports Complex with the participation of teams from St Martins, St Edwards, St Aloysius, San Andrea, St Francis and Antonio Bosio Gzira Secondary.

In all, 110 players took part along with several members of the national squad who were assigned to each school, conducting a training session and introducing beginners to the game before the tournament got underway.

The national team players officiated the games with coaches on both sides passing on advice.

St Martins College beat San Andrea School in the final.

Meanwhile, an U-17 friendly, between Alligators and Kavallieri, took place last week at the Marsa Rugby Ground. The score was 5-5.

Alligator's try was scored by Daniel Farrugia, with Kavallieri's try coming from Zack McBride.
