A prison inmate admitted to intensive care suffering from flu is in serious condition while another is stable, Parliament was told yesterday.

Replying to questions from Opposition MPs Beppe Fenech Adami and Claudette Buttigieg, Parliamentary Secretary for Health Chris Fearne said personnel from the Public Health Department visited the prisons on Tuesday and found about 10 inmates suffering from influenza A, a strain prevalent in the community at this time of the year.

They were administered anti-viral medication and some of them were isolated to avoid spread. Two of them were admitted to intensive care at Mater Dei hospital.

Dr Fearne said that unfortunately, the flu claimed victims both in Malta and abroad. It was for this reason that the government offered free vaccination to everyone, including prison inmates.
