Indian Double Trap shooter Ronjan Sodhi, who matched two world records to win gold at last month's World Cup in Belgrade, will not be going to the Olympic Games after a request for a wildcard place was turned down.

India's lone qualification berth for the event was secured by Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, who claimed a silver in Athens four years ago to clinch the country's only medal of the Games.

India chose in advance to send the athletes who won qualifying spots to Beijing.

"Unfortunately Sodhi won't go, it is very disappointing for all of us," Indian Olympic Association (IOA) secretary Randhir Singh said.

"If he had (also) qualified, with Rathore also shooting, we would have had a very strong presence in the event."

The national federation made a late request to the sport's world governing body for a wildcard berth but were told this week that there were no spots available.

The governing body can hand out wildcards as well as 'hardship' places, which are reserved for top performers who just fail to qualify.
