Inter will start their Serie A title defence under new coach Jose Mourinho at Sampdoria on August 30 or 31 after the fixtures for 2008-09 were drawn yesterday.

Following his transfer from Barcelona, Brazil forward Ronaldinho is in line to make his league debut for Milan against Bologna at the San Siro the same weekend.

Last year's runners-up Roma kick off at home to Napoli while Juventus travel to fierce rivals Fiorentina.

Serie B play-off winners Lecce visit Torino and Chievo, who topped the division two standings last season, ease their way in by welcoming Reggina to the Stadio Bentegodi.

The first major derby is Milan-Inter on Day Five (September 28). Juventus and Torino clash in Day Eight and Roma and Lazio cross swords in Day 12.

Day 13 sees the Derby d'Italia as Inter host Juventus. The latter entertain Milan on December 13 or 14, a week before the championship takes a three-week break for Christmas.

The close of the campaign is packed with mouth-watering ties, most notably Milan-Roma in the penultimate week.

The last day sees Juventus play Lazio, Fiorentina host Milan, Roma take on Torino and Inter play home to Atalanta.

Inter are unhappy with the September 28 derby clash.

"It is better to play in Week 5 than just before Christmas like last year, but in that period there is the Champions League," warned club director Ernesto Paolillo.

"The derby would be played two days before a game that could well be very important."

Milan should have other concerns though as the calendar has given them a dramatic title run-in for May.

The last four rounds of the Serie A season will be decisive for Milan's league hopes, as they will welcome Juventus on May 10, visit Udinese, then face Roma at San Siro on May 24 and finish the campaign in Florence on May 31.

The dates of these fixtures are already decided, as the final four rounds are always played simultaneously on Sunday afternoon.

The Serie A and B championships start on Saturday, August 30 and conclude on May 31, 2009.

Meanwhile, the chairmen of the Serie B clubs boycotted the ceremony, where the second division fixtures were also drawn, because of a dispute over the distribution of television revenue. Last year a total of £50m was promised, but there have been no assurances so far.
