Match-fixing: Former Bela-rus keeper Valery Shantolosov has been charged with trying to fix two of his country's Euro 2004 qualifying matches. Shantolosov was charged with attempting to influence the outcome of two of qualifiers, against the Czech Republic and Moldova in 2003. Belarus lost 3-1 at home to the Czechs in Minsk on Sept. 6 and then travelled to Tiraspol in Moldova where they lost 2-1 four days later.

Tottenham: Tottenham manager Martin Jol said a taxing schedule of three matches in a week in South Africa was perfect preparation for the start of the new season. Spurs beat Orlando Pirates 2-1 in Cape Town on Tuesday and defeated Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday. They will play one of them again on Saturday. "It has been a terrific tour for us in South Africa. None of the matches have been easy," he said.

Hunger strike: Granada 74 president Carlos Marsa has begun a hunger strike in protest against the council's refusal to allow his club to use the local stadium. Marsa hit the headlines last month when he took advantage of the introduction of new regulations to buy the club a place in a higher league by purchasing Ciudad de Murcia's berth in Division Two.

New coach: Jose del Solar was named as the new coach of Peru, replacing Julio Cesar Uribe who was fired last week after four months in the job. Del Solar became Peru's fifth coach in the last three years after Paulo Autuori, Freddy Ternero, Franco Navarro and Uribe.

Curfew-breaker: Indonesia striker Zaenal Arif has been hit with a six-month ban from soccer following his late-night Asian Cup escapades. Zaenal was dropped from the national team before Indonesia's final group game against South Korea after he broke a 10 p.m. curfew. Indonesia lost the game 1-0 and were eliminated from the tournament.
