Sliema notched a 3-0 win over Aloysians in an entertaining match from the men's first division league at the Cottonera Sports Complex last weekend.

Paul Vella and Ivan Genchev played a central role in Sliema's victory as they exploited the gaps in Aloysians' defensive block during the match.

Aloysians sorely felt the absence of the injured Alex Spiteri, one of their most talented players.

Nevertheless, Gordon Cachia's formation showed commendable fighting spirit as they gave Sliema a good run for their money.

Bernard Bartolo had a good game in his new role as setter.

As for Sliema, they are improving with every game and look well-prepared to challenge their rivals Valletta Mapei.

In the women's second division league, promotion favourites Birkirkara cruised to a 3-0 win over newcomers Phoenix.

Adriana Pace tried to offer some resistance to Birkirkara but she couldn't do it alone. To make matters worse for Phoenix, their setter pulled out of the match after suffering an injury during the warm-up.
