An Iraqi national was remanded in custody yesterday after he tried to break away from a police escort on Tuesday morning.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera heard Fawaz Abd El Mesi Tadrit, 36, from Basra plead not guilty to trying to escape from Mater Dei Hospital after he underwent a medical examination.

Mr Mesi Tadrit is currently awaiting the result of his application for refugee status.

Lawyer Richard Sladden appearing as legal aid had asked the court for his client be kept at Ta' Kandja where he resides.

Police Inspectors Edel Mary Camilleri and Clifton Pulis prosecuted.
