An Indiana motorway became a Rocky Road when 40,000lbs of ice cream spilled from a lorry, causing chaos at the start of the Christmas weekend getaway.

The Journal Gazette and WPTA-TV said the spill in Fort Wayne happened at about 4pm and was expected to take as long as six hours to clean up completely. It closed two lanes of south-bound Interstate 69, with just one lane remaining open.

Police said the lorry was trying to enter the interstate when it overturned, spilling cartons of vanilla, caramel praline crunch and other flavours of Edy's ice cream.

The truck driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
