Our second photo journalist feature comes from 10-year-old Petra Frey, of Siġġiewi. Petra, a student at St Dorothy School, in Sliema, enjoys and takes a pride in Malta's history and countryside.

On March 30, Heritage Malta organised an open weekend at Għar Dalam, Borġ in-Nadur and Tas-Silġ. My parents thought it would be an interesting way to spend our Sunday, so after lunch we went to Għar Dalam. We had just arrived when they announced that the guided tour to Borġ in-Nadur was going to start. So off we went, on foot, following the guide who gave us lots of information about the different temples found in Malta. No wonder it is called Borġ, we had to walk uphill and there at the top we found the remains of a temple. I took a photo of it. Although not much is left of this temple it is in the shape of the letter D and nowhere else in the whole world is there anything like it. We should be proud of these national treasures.

Then we went down the hill. We saw a chameleon and I took a photo of it too; then back to Għar Dalam, just in time for the guided tour. There are lots of exhibits. Just one room is dedicated to the bones found in this cave. The last find dates to 1995, when a pelvis and the jaw of a hippopotamus were found.

Another room contains the history of the place, how the cave was formed, and lots of fossils which were found. Then it was time to go to the cave and I was really excited. The cave is huge and there are stalactites and stalagmites which are fascinating. The force of the water left marks on the rocks which are still visible. This is the only place in Malta where skeletons of hippos and baby elephants were found.

Then we went to Tas- Silġ but unfortunately, although it was 4.30 p.m. it had closed so we missed it.

It was definitely worth going to this open weekend. I am looking forward to the end of April when another heritage weekend is planned. This time it will be the Roman Villa, the natural history museum, the catacombs and the Jewish catacombs, which have never been open to the public. I suggest that other children should visit them too. Well done to Heritage Malta for the good work and keep it up.

Having guides explain to us was much better than going on our own.
