Joseph Haydn’s Creation Mass will be the subject of the next monthly music appreciation evening organised by the German-Maltese Circle Classical Music Group.

It will be conducted by Aldo Fenech, the classical CD reviewer for The Sunday Times.

Haydn wrote his Mass No. 13 in B flat major, Hob. 22/13 – the fifth in a series of six Masses – in 1801. It is known as the Schöpfungsmesse or Creation Mass because for the words Qui tollis peccata mundi in the Gloria, Haydn recycled music from the Adam and Eve’s final duet in his masterpiece, the oratorio The Creation, a fact which scandalised Empress Maria Theresa so much that she ordered Haydn to recompose that passage for her own copy of the work.

It is scored for orchestra and organ, and vocally, for SATB choir and four soloists.

All are welcome to attend and become members of this cultural networking group by supplying an e-mail address for inclusion in the mailing list.

Membership is free.

The event will be held at Messina Palace, 141 St Christopher Street, Valletta, on Friday at 6.30 p.m.
