Hawkers in Gozo are not being  consulted over plans to transfer the Victoria monti from It-Tokk to Savina Square.

Nationalist MP Marthese Portelli told parliament the market had been in It-Tokk for 90 years,  and no proper justification has been given for the move.

Contrary to what happened before the monti transfer in Valletta, the hawkers in Gozo were neither consulted, nor offered financial compensation if they gave up their stall, she said.

Their letters to the Gozo Minister and the Economy Minister, among others, went unanswered.

She said Savina Square is unsuitable for the market because it is small and the move, away from Victoria's hub, would rob residents of parking, It would also create new traffic problems and also cause problems to festa organisers.

Dr Portelli, the shadow minister for transport, energy and the environment, confirmed she will be an election candidate on the 13th district (Gozo) as well as the ninth district.

The Gozo-born lawyer was elected from the ninth district in 2013 (instead of Dolores Cristina) and did not contest the Gozo district.

The PN has been on the lookout for candidates in Gozo, particularly as long-standing front-runner Giovanna Debono is no longer in the parliamentary group and is not expected to seek re-election.
