Lewis Hamilton gave the home crowd what they wanted on Saturday, roaring to pole position for the British grand-prix after a nail biting final battle with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso.

Hamilton made it round the windy Silverstone track in 1:19.885 with Raikkonen second on 1:19.753.

Alonso starts third with Ferrari's Felipe Massa fourth, setting the scene for another classic McLaren-Ferrari battle. The Ferraris are on the dirty side of the track, and one has to see whether they have more fuel on board than the McLarens.

BMW's Robert Kubica is fifth with Toyota's Ralf Schumacher sharing the third row. Toyota had also done well in testing here just over a week ago.

The fourth row is taken by Renault drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Gianfranco Fisichella in seventh and eighth.

At the other end of the table, the surprise was Nico Rosberg who only qualified 17th in his Williams, one place ahead of Briton Jenson Button, back in the cockpit after a back injury forced him out of Friday afternoon practice.
