Lewis Hamilton won his first pole position on Saturday as Mclaren secured the front row for Sunday's grand prix in Montreal. The silver cars had also started in first and second in the last race, in Monaco, although Fernando Alonso was first then.

Lining up behind Hamilton and Alonso on Sunday will be BMW's Nick Heidfeld with Ferrari duo Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa in fourth and fifth. They are followed by Mark Webber (Red Bull), Nico Rosberg (Williams) Robert Kubica (BMW), Giancarlo Fisichella (Renault) and Jerno Trulli (Toyota).

The qualifying session, on a warm track, was a difficult one for Red Bull's David Coulthard and Renault's Heikki Kovalainen. Coulthard suffered braking problems as soon as he went out on his first lap, made an excursion into the grass and back to the pits. Kovalainen hit a wall and lost his rear wing, bringing out the red flags. The Renault rookie had his car replaced after a crash on Friday but lost an engine in morning practice on Saturday and will be docked 10 places from his final qualifying position. Both drivers managed to rejoin the session but it was not enough for Kovalainen, who did not make it past Q1 and will start almost from the back.

Also eliminated in Q1 were Davidson (Super Aguri), Wurz (Williams), Sutil (Spyker), Albers (Spyker) and Ralph Schumacher (Toyota), not a good sign for the German, current fighting for his Toyota career. Both Torro Rosso made it to the second session as did Takuma Sato on the Super Aguri.

Sato (Super Aguri), Liuzzi (Toro Rosso), Barrichello (Honda), Coulthard (Red Bull), Button (Honda)and Speed (Toro Rosso) were eliminated but Toyota's Jarno Trulli scraped in to Q3 in tenth place.
