The secretary of the General Workers' Union's manufacturing and SMEs section, Roberto Cristiano, has resigned.

Although in a statement the GWU thanked Mr Cristiano for his work during the time he spent active within the union, it did not actually say that he had resigned.

This was confirmed later by the union's media executive who told The Times that Mr Cristiano had found another job.

The GWU said Mr Cristiano had been a section secretary for the past 10 years and had carried out his job with dedication and commitment. It wished him success for the future.

Mr Cristiano could not be contacted.
