Labour leadership contender Michael Falzon yesterday met officials of the General Workers' Union's Metal and Drydocks Workers' Section to discuss the challenges ahead for Malta Shipyards.

Dr Falzon said that while understanding that Malta had to respect its obligations as a European Union member, the government still had to do all it could to protect Maltese workers.

He said he believed in the capabilities of the Maltese worker, adding that there should be no divisions on whatever was in the best interest of workers.

Dr Falzon stressed the importance of a constant and sincere social dialogue, saying that this was the commitment he was making if elected party leader.
