As all of Malta salutes President Emeritus Guido de Marco, remembering him as an outstanding statesman, the Law Students’ Society (GħSL) mourns the loss of an excellent lawyer and unique lecturer.

Prof. de Marco stood out as a lecturer, making his lectures in criminal law one of the most discussed among students reading law at University.

A staunch believer that education goes beyond parroting of others’ ideas, Prof. de Marco provoked his students to abide by his method: the art of thought.

Despite the nerves of being pinpointed in class and the anxiety of wanting to impress a man of such high calibre, students appreciated the fact that Prof. de Marco regarded his classes as more than a crowd of mere 20-year-olds who would gladly listen to him in awe, and he went to great lengths to bring out the prospective lawyer in each and every one of his students.

GħSL is also grateful to Prof. de Marco for his contribution towards the society’s publication, Id-Dritt. In addition to his ardent backing of this publication, Prof. de Marco was also a contributor in the 18th volume of Id-Dritt, through his typically well-versed article ‘First Arvid Pardo Memorial Lecture: A Renewed Trusteeship Council – Guardian of Future Generations: Malta’s Initiative at the United Nations’.

Prof. de Marco has left his mark in more ways than one. He will undoubtedly be remembered by the nation as a man who gave his all for it. He will live on as part of GħSL, as it continues to regard him as its honorary president and thank him for his countless years of dedication towards the formation of lawyers.
