Alfred Grixti has in a statement confirmed that he will be a candidate for the post of general secretary of the MLP.
He confirmed his intention in a letter to the party delegates yesterday.
Mr Grixti is headmaster of a state primary school and a long time Labour activist. During the 1996-1998 Labour government he was deputy chairman of the Employment and Training Corporation and was adviser to the then Minister of Social Policy. His area of academic specialization is in education, politics, industrial relations and human resources management. He holds degrees from the University of Malta and Oxford.
In the MLP he served Education Secretary and is editorial consultant to Maltastar.com.
“I believe that the post of General Secretary of the Labour Party should be a unifying factor within the party and an open means by which party delegates, activists and grassroots find their legitimate channel to project their feedback and thoughts to the party leadership on a daily basis and not before an election. I believe that I have the experience, loyalty and knowhow to work in harmony with both the party grassroots and party leadership in order to further – and permanently – increase the fields of support towards the Party,” Mr Grixti said.
Other candidates for the election, due on August 4, are incumbent Jason Micallef, Joe Vella Bonnici and former election candidate Joe Chetcuti.
