The incinerator at the Gozo General Hospital has been shut down and clinical waste is now being disposed of through a new system that started being used last week.

The old incinerator facilities, including the chimney, were dismantled earlier this week.

Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said during a visit to the site last Wednesday that the closure was the result of close collaboration with WasteServ Malta Ltd.

Clinical waste generated at the Gozo hospital is being temporarily stored within a purposely refrigerated truck and then transported, according to demand, to the new incineration facilities in Marsa, which also include an energy-recovery component.

The minister assured the public that the transfer of clinical waste is safe as it is fully compliant with regulations issued by the United Nations on the transport of hazardous waste.
