I totally disagree with the idea of building an airstrip on Gozo.

After Malta has been ruined by over-development, it seems it is now Gozo's turn to do the same thing. A kilometre-long airstrip would ruin Mġarr ix-Xini valley.

Who will be prepared to pay at least €60 to fly to Malta and back when you can pay just €1.15 for the ferry or €10 for a direct bus to and from Cirkewwa? How could you beat that? And after we have spent a fortune to build this airstrip do we have any guarantee that it will pay its way? Do we then abandon it?

Our natural and even historical heritage is risking destruction if we continue with our building mania all over the island.

We do not need an airstrip. The Gozo ferry service is fine, and now there is a bus shuttle to and from the airport, which is very convenient for travellers.

Last year was a very good year for tourism, but there is no guarantee that this will continue to be so. Tourists are not staying away from Gozo because there is no direct air link but because the island is not advertised enough overseas.

Is it worth ruining a kilometre of land and natural sites so that a handful of people will be able to use this service for business or leisure? What weekend visitors to Gozo want is to admire the natural scenery and not to watch planes take off and land.
